The Festival is a vibrant space that ferries you to one of Kenya's hidden gems of Lake Victoria. Its two days of nothing but music, fashion, film, food, artistry, literature, sports and conversations that take you back in time into the wealth of the Suba people.
The festival is a cultural answer to the question, "Can a people die?" As a result of assimilation and intermarriage with the Luo, the Suba culture has been under pressure and the language is now listed in UNESCO's Red Book of Endangered Languages (2003).
The festival encompasses several cultural and social activities in the following major categories:
1. Food exhibition
2. Sports
3. Cultural performances
4. Art exhibition
5. Cultural pageant fashion show
6. Book exhibition
7. Conversations on various topical issues
8. Tours - Rusinga and Mfangano Islands are in the tentative list of UNESCO's World Heritage Sites.
The theme for this year is SPACES, which is a celebration of the platform the festival has provided for the Abasuba community in the last five years. Rusinga Cultural Festival 2017 hopes to continue creating new spaces for freedom of expression, participation, knowledge and economic empowerment.
On 21st and 22nd December 2017, you will be left in awe as you lap up the rich culture and stunning serenade of nature with every sunset and sunrise over Africa's largest fresh water lake.
PLEASE NOTE that this is a FREE event that is open to the public. ALL ARE WELCOME!
