Silverstone Air, one of Kenya's popular commercial airline has introduced two daily return flights along the Nairobi – Eldoret route in a bid to tap into the huge demand for air transport to and from the North Rift region. The carrier that currently operates two Dash 8-100s, one Dash 8-300s, one cargo plane as well as two Fokker 50s has made its maiden flight from Wilson airport in Nairobi to the Eldoret International Airport in Uasin Gishu County.
 
Kenya Airways has increased its route offering by launching flights to Rome, Italy, and Geneva, Switzerland – the airline’s 4th and 5th European destinations after Amsterdam, London, and Paris. The introduction of these routes is part of Kenya Airways’ network expansion strategy steered towards growing its market share, increasing revenues and financial turnaround.
 
Uganda Airlines has announced plans to start flying to Nairobi, a move poised to raise competition on the Nairobi-Entebbe route. On its twitter account, the airline said it was making preparations to commence its first flight at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport following its revival recently. The move will come as the biggest challenge for Kenya Airways and its subsidiary Jambojet, which ply the route. The route is also operated by Rwandair.
 
Ethiopian Airlines on Boeing 737 Max Aircraft Ahead of the recertification of the Boeing 737 Max Aircraft grounded globally following the Ethiopian Airlines involvement in two fatal crashes killing over 500 people, The Managing Director of Ethiopian International Services, Esayas Hailu says it will be the last to operate the aircraft when the ban is lifted.
 
Sudan unrest In the midst of political unrest in the Sudanese capital of Khartoum, a number of airlines have suspended or cancelled flights. Airport staff and pilots are allegedly being forced to work at gunpoint, despite the Sudanese Aviation Professionals Alliance (SAPA) calling for ‘civil disobedience’.
 
China Southern Airlines has launched direct flights from Nairobi to Changsha. China as it seeks to expand its base in East Africa and cash in on more revenue in the wake of heightened competition from other players in the market. The Chinese airline operator is targeting mainly passengers from Kenya visiting the Chinese state for business. The airline will deploy its 330-200 Airbus twice per week (Wednesday and Sunday) while non-stop flights between Nairobi and Guangzhou will be on Monday and Friday.
 
 
Air France spearheads  campaign to eliminate use of plastic cutlery, cups, stirrers and other single-use plastic items currently used in all Air France flights globally. The Airline, which is a SkyTeam Airline Alliance member, has kicked off a global campaign to eliminate 1,300 tons of single-use plastic by end year. In this way, Air France will eliminate 210 million single-use plastic items by the end of 2019. This shift in the company’s policies was announced on this year’s World Environment Day.
